Art Fundamentals, Part 1: Mixing & Understanding Colour

This week, we’re going back to the basics and exploring Colour Theory!

We’ll create our own Colour Wheels to help us understand how colours work together and how to develop successful colour palettes for our artwork

We’ll explore:

🎨 Primary, Secondary & Tertiary Colours

🎨 How to mix and create new colours

🎨 Warm & cool tones and how they can affect a painting or drawing

🎨 Complementary colours and how they can be used to create contrast and impact

A great introduction to the fundamentals of colour and an opportunity to start building your confidence with colour mixing and creating your own palettes

Friday 18th September

Pop Art

Building on the colour skills we learnt and revisited last week, we’ll be creating our own artwork inspired by Pop Art.

What is Pop Art?

Pop Art is an art movement that became popular during the 1950s and 1960s. Artists took inspiration from everyday life, popular culture, advertising, comics, packaging and famous people, often using bold colours, strong outlines, repetition and eye-catching imagery.

Pop Art is all about making ordinary subjects stand out and grab our attention!

We’ll use the Colour Theory skills from last week to help create our Pop Art pieces. We can experiment with:

  • Primary, secondary and tertiary colours
  • Complementary colours to create strong contrast
  • Warm and cool colours to change the mood and energy of our artwork
  • Tints, tones and shades to add variety and depth
  • Bold, contrasting colour combinations inspired by the bright, graphic style of Pop Art

There are no rules about making your artwork look exactly like traditional Pop Art — we’ll use the movement as inspiration and play with colour, contrast and composition to create something uniquely our own. Book here: https://square.link/u/4HloCD4x?src=sms

Friday 25th September

Colour Match: Blending Reality Challenge

We’ll begin by selecting a magazine image or photograph that has an interesting scene — it might have striking colours, textures, patterns or lots of subtle colour variations

We’ll then choose a section of our image to remove or cover

By carefully observing the colours surrounding the missing area, we’ll use our colour-mixing skills to mix and match the colours we can see. We’ll then recreate the missing section using paint, pencils, pastels or another chosen medium

Finally, we’ll gradually blend and layer our colours so that the newly created section flows seamlessly into the original image

What we’ll explore:

– Colour matching: How accurately can you recreate a colour you can see?

– Blending: Creating smooth transitions between colours.

– Tones & shades: Recognising subtle changes in light and dark.

– Warm & cool colours: Identifying the temperature of colours within an image.

– Complementary colours: Understanding how neighbouring and opposing colours interact

– Observation: Looking closely at colour rather than relying on what we think a colour should look like

The challenge…

The really fun part is that there isn’t necessarily one “correct” colour!

You’ll need to experiment, adjust and compare your mixed colours against the original image until you feel you’ve achieved the closest possible match

Can you make the missing section disappear? Book here if you’re up for the challenge: https://square.link/u/sDoqnw4v?src=sms

Friday 2nd October

Art Fundamentals, Part 2: Light, Tone, Texture & Shading

Come and get cosy, slow down and get creative this Autumn 🍂

Building on the colour skills explored in Part 1, this workshop will focus on light, tone, texture and shading — exploring how these elements can add depth, form and realism to our artwork

Using pencils, charcoal, pastels or another chosen medium, we’ll create an Autumnal-themed observational drawing, taking inspiration from real objects and the natural textures and colours of the season to carefully study what we can see

Observational Drawing is the practice of drawing directly from real-life subjects, rather than from photographs or imagination. It encourages us to slow down, really look and explore details such as shape, proportion, light, shadow, texture and tone

Through this process, we’ll experiment with different marks and techniques to capture the textures, shadows and changing tones of autumn, creating a finished piece inspired by what we observe. Book below to secure your space: https://square.link/u/31JBICkQ?src=sms

Friday 23rd October

Acrylic Painting – Forest & Woodland Workshop

Step into the woodland and explore the beauty of nature through acrylic painting.

We’ll explore some basic acrylic painting techniques, including layering, blending, dry brushing and creating texture, while looking at how light, tone, colour and perspective can help create depth and atmosphere.

If acrylic painting is new to you, this is an ideal introduction to the medium, while also building on the colour skills explored in previous weeks. If you’re an experienced painter, it’s a lovely opportunity to revisit, refresh and develop your existing skills.

A relaxed and creative workshop with plenty of opportunity to experiment, build confidence and enjoy the process of painting. Book here: https://square.link/u/0pcl8idb?src=sms

Friday 9th October

Impressionist Art – Pointillism

This week we’ll be exploring Impressionist Art, focusing specifically on Pointillism — a technique where small, distinct dots of pure colour are placed closely together to build an entire image

A few key facts:

– Key Artists: Georges Seurat and Paul Signac pioneered the technique around 1886

– Optical Mixing: Rather than mixing colours on a palette, artists placed dots side by side so the viewer’s eye blends them together from a distance

– Colour & Science: Pointillism was influenced by colour theory and the science of optics — working a little like the pixels on a modern screen

🌿 Mindful & Relaxing: The repetitive, gentle process of creating individual dots can be calming and absorbing, encouraging us to slow down, focus on the moment and enjoy the creative process. It can provide a relaxing opportunity to support mindfulness and overall wellbeing

We’ll explore how we can use dots, colour and careful observation to create our own Pointillist-inspired artwork — taking our time and enjoying the process along the way. Limited spaces available, book here to avoid missing out: https://square.link/u/Zi5bqvnB?src=sms

Friday 30th October

Consolidation Week

This week is all about revisiting, finishing and building on the work we’ve explored throughout the term

We’ll have the opportunity to return to any unfinished pieces — whether that’s a collage, acrylic painting, Pointillism piece or another project you’ve started in previous weeks

We’re anticipating this to be a quieter, more relaxed session, making the most of the half-term week for those who are able to attend. It’s a great opportunity to finish work you may not have had the time, space or resources to complete at home — particularly useful if you don’t have access to your own art materials

It also means that those who usually attend but may be unable to join us for a new project during half-term won’t miss out on anything new or exciting when we return

Already finished your previous projects?

No problem! You’ll have the opportunity to create a fresh ‘mini-project’, drawing inspiration from the techniques, medium s, skills and artists we’ve explored throughout the term

Perhaps you have an idea in mind for the approaching Hallow’ or Festive seasons — this could be the perfect opportunity to bring it to life!

A relaxed week of finishing, experimenting and creating at your own pace. Book here: https://square.link/u/wkA2a3dg?src=sms

Friday 16th October

Collage Week!

One of our most popular workshops! Whether you’d like to re-create an image you love or simply create something completely new, collage offers the freedom to explore and express yourself without some of the confines other mediums may present

Collage is an art form with a long history, dating back centuries, and became particularly popular within modern art during the 20th century

You might like to create a landscape, an object or even a pet portrait!

Collage is a huge amount of fun, allowing us to play with textures, layers and blocks of colour — but most importantly, experimentation. There are no rules about what you can combine, cut, layer or create. Have fun and see where it takes you: https://square.link/u/YAzZoWPq?src=sms

Zen-Doodling & Biomorphic Art Workshop

This workshop will explore the calming art of Zen-Doodling and the flowing, organic forms of Biomorphic Art, inspired by the beauty of nature

Zen-Doodling is a mindful drawing practice using repeated patterns, shapes, lines and textures to create intricate designs. The repetitive process can encourage focus, relaxation and a sense of calm

Biomorphic Art is inspired by the natural world, using flowing, organic shapes and forms that resemble plants, leaves, cells, shells and other elements found in nature

We’ll look at patterns, shapes and textures in nature, using these as inspiration to create our own expressive, flowing artwork

Whether you’re looking to reduce stress, reconnect with your creativity or simply enjoy some mindful time for yourself, this workshop offers a warm, welcoming space where there is no pressure to be “good at art” — just enjoy the process: https://square.link/u/QydCk2pG?src=sms

Kinusaiga Art – The Art of Fabric Art

Kinusaiga is a traditional Japanese art form that creates detailed pictures using pieces of fabric, carefully fitted into grooves within a base rather than sewn together

Students will learn the fundamentals of: fabric selection, colour and pattern, composition, cutting and shaping fabric, creating clean edges, layering and texture, and carefully fitting pieces together to build a finished image

It’s a wonderfully calm, tactile and mindful creative process, with plenty of opportunity for experimentation and individual expression. Book your space here: https://square.link/u/NqJ9osMg?src=sms

Lino Stamp Printing

Simple, satisfying and wonderfully versatile, lino printing is an art form that can be used in so many creative ways — from card making and illustration to scrapbooking, stationery and handmade gifts. The possibilities are endless!

With roots in traditional printmaking, lino cutting became popular as an accessible form of relief printing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Artists carve away areas of a lino block, leaving the raised surface to receive ink and create the final print. Today, this hands-on technique remains a much-loved part of contemporary art and illustration

Join us for a fun, hands-on workshop where we’ll explore the fundamentals of lino cutting and printing, from creating your design and safely carving your block to inking and producing your own prints

Whether you prefer a more complex and detailed design or something simple, bold and striking, lino printing is wonderfully adaptable. It’s an enjoyable medium that rewards experimentation — and there’s something incredibly satisfying about revealing your finished print. Book below: https://square.link/u/NykpkNAx?src=sms

Friday 25th December – CLOSED

Adults Art Club resumes on Friday 8th January

Friday 11th December

Painting the Negative – Whimsical Art

Explore the playful world of negative painting, where instead of painting the subject itself, we build the image by painting the space around it

Using whimsical forms, imaginative shapes and flowing layers, we’ll discover how negative space can create depth, definition and surprising detail. This relaxed approach encourages experimentation and helps us see shapes and spaces in a completely different way

A lovely opportunity to slow down, explore colour and create something wonderfully imaginative—no artistic perfection required! Reserve your place here: https://square.link/u/7BPoVcYt?src=sms

Friday 18th December

Winter Night Skies

As our final workshop of the year, join us for a cosy, relaxed and creative session to round off the season before we close for Christmas

This workshop will explore the beauty and atmosphere of a winter night sky. Create your own dramatic moonlit scene, perhaps featuring silhouetted trees, a snowy landscape or a cosy little house glowing in the distance

There’s no pressure to create a perfect painting — this workshop is all about experimenting, enjoying the process and creating something you’ll be proud to take home

We’ll explore:

– Simple blending and colour mixing

– Creating depth using silhouettes

– Texture and layering

– Highlights, light and atmospheric effects

– Using colour theory to create mood and atmosphere

– Suitable for all levels

Building on our previous Colour Theory workshop, we’ll look at how colour choices can transform a scene — from creating a cool, atmospheric winter landscape to introducing a warm, cosy focal point that draws the eye and brings the painting to life

A relaxed and enjoyable way to revisit your colour skills, experiment with acrylics and finish the year with a little creativity: https://square.link/u/oeeqN0Hn?src=sms
